Welcome to the exciting world of Chiropractic. If you have never heard of Chiropractic, it means, “done by hand”. It is a natural, complimentary/alternative, hands-on, drug and surgery free approach to health. Chiropractic has a very long history dating back to 1895 where the first official manipulation/adjustment was given. Since its inception, Chiropractic has risen to become the third most used primary health care profession in the world after medicine and dentistry. Chiropractic works on the premise that good health is partially dependent on a normally functioning spine and nervous system.

My main concern is your spine and nervous system and how well both are functioning. It is therefore my task to evaluate the biomechanical structure of each vertebral segment and ensure that they are moving freely and not displaced or fixed in any way. Any such displacement or ‘jammed’ vertebra can cause the spinal nerve that exits from the intervertebral opening, to become irritated through direct pressure or through indirect stimulation or irritation. Therefore any problem in any one of the vertebral joints can affect the related part of your nervous system, which in turn can lead to such symptoms as pain in the back or neck as well as many other spinal problems. I will then evaluate and identify any problem that might exist within the spine to correct any dysfunction that might be present.

An everyday action, such as falls or accidents, lifting of heavy objects or even high stress levels, may cause any of the movable vertebrae to lose its normal motion. This then causes the fixation or ‘jamming’ of the joints, which now leads to further irritation of both the joint and the nerve. This irritation now leads to altered muscle activity around this segment causing trigger points in the muscle (areas of hyperirritability in the muscle). Nerve and joint irritation can lead to pain locally at the vicinity of the joint or a referral elsewhere in the body. The nerves ability to function now becomes altered.

Chiropractic has been known to treat almost any condition that is related to the neuromusculoskeletal system (nerve, joint and muscle). These conditions range from neck and back pain, migraine, headaches, whiplash, shoulder pain, arm and elbow pain, tingling in arms and hands, all the way to leg, hip, knee and buttock pain. Therefore, any condition that is related to any joint in the body can potentially be helped through Chiropractic care

I start with taking a full health and medical history relating to your pain and medical ailments. This is then followed by a thorough physical examination to determine the diagnosis by using a series of orthopaedic and neurological testing. Radiographs are my passion and are often requested along with lab investigations if need be.

Once I determine that your case will be treated through my care, I will use specific chiropractic manipulation referred to as adjustments. These adjustments are done by hand and consist of high velocity, low amplitude thrusts to the specific vertebra. This aims to restore range of motion and reduce the biomechanical irritation that exists. This can be a once off treatment but more than often will require follow up treatments to ensure that the spine is corrected. No two patients are the same, so expect time that your body can realign itself and adapt to the changes that are occurring.

No, I am not. When there are cases that are out of my scope of practice, I am adequately trained to recognise them and to know when medication or surgery is warranted of which I will always refer to a medical specialty that is best suited for your condition.

Yes, virtually all medical aids cover for chiropractic care. Some schemes/payment plans may not cover for chiropractic care, of which the best option is to call your medical aid and ask them yourself.

As with everything in life and every medical intervention, Chiropractic care does have its own set of risks. This may include aggravation of any inflammatory condition, neuromusculoskeletal sprain and very rarely a vertebral artery syndrome. However, it is important to know that you have a greater chance of being struck by lightning (1 < 100 000) than suffering from a complication of spinal manipulation (1 > 1 000 000)
